In 1989 though, they had to avoid defeat to Chile at home in their final qualifier to ensure their place in Italia '90 the following summer.<br /><br />With a squad blessed with legendary players such as Romario, Bebeto, Branco, Dunga and Careca it was an unusual situation to be in, particularly when considering that much of that squad would go on to lift the World Cup five years later.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o5nxPGHQ1aQ/VwwjtTVgk0I/AAAAAAAAH6U/77xBxVkZMj4i6I1_HYeKSuwx0ihKNKGAg/s1600/2176281_full-lnd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o5nxPGHQ1aQ/VwwjtTVgk0I/AAAAAAAAH6U/77xBxVkZMj4i6I1_HYeKSuwx0ihKNKGAg/s640/2176281_full-lnd.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />With just over 20 minutes to go in their tension packed tilt with Chile though, Brazil looked to be heading to Italy following a goal from Careca in the 49th minute.<br /><br />But then disaster struck. A flare was thrown over Chilean goalkeeper Roberto Rojas' head and the keeper tumbled to the ground clutching his face.<br /><br />His furious teammates waved the referee over to the scene of the crime and pointed out the blood pouring out of his head, soaking his jersey.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eKy1cK-r2Sw/Vwwh_W3Vb9I/AAAAAAAAH58/ic_PE_LtLS4-2DqhaIY6yYROP7BxmiMeA/s1600/article-1320157-0018731700000258-862_468x328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="448" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eKy1cK-r2Sw/Vwwh_W3Vb9I/AAAAAAAAH58/ic_PE_LtLS4-2DqhaIY6yYROP7BxmiMeA/s640/article-1320157-0018731700000258-862_468x328.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />The referee abandoned the match immediately and Brazil's players were left trembling with the thought that they were going to be thrown out of the World Cup; a tournament that they see as their birth right.<br /><br />The Chilean media immediately claimed that they had witnessed the flare striking Rojas and had obviously caused his injury, and in the days before smartphones and digital cameras there was scant footage to refute their claims.<br /><br />Fortunately for Brazil, one of their own countrymen serving as a pitch side photographer had captured four or five clear images of the flare landing at least a meter away from Rojas and the goalkeeper's subsequent play acting.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1A3nfO9CjbM/Vwwh0XORoRI/AAAAAAAAH54/Fk2L1dq1ne8lRncT1d2iG7ryYEkVJjFRQ/s1600/roberto-rojas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="340" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1A3nfO9CjbM/Vwwh0XORoRI/AAAAAAAAH54/Fk2L1dq1ne8lRncT1d2iG7ryYEkVJjFRQ/s640/roberto-rojas.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />It turned out that the Chile stopper, who coincidentally played his club football for Sao Paulo, had concealed a razor blade in his glove and purposely cut himself in planned move to force the referee to abandon the match if the score was in Brazil's favour.<br /><br />The photos of the incident were turned over to FIFA and Brazil was awarded a 2-0 victory which sent them off to the 1990 World Cup.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uwe7HJHRdUY/VwwjNOzQT1I/AAAAAAAAH6Q/GtqI7cSt6L0AZ_ZjI8z-qEVTo1AWbie7A/s1600/rakettrojas1024550.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="344" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uwe7HJHRdUY/VwwjNOzQT1I/AAAAAAAAH6Q/GtqI7cSt6L0AZ_ZjI8z-qEVTo1AWbie7A/s640/rakettrojas1024550.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />Chile was subsequently banned from World Cup qualifying in 1994 and Rojas was given a lifetime ban from competitive football, along with his manager Orlando Aravena and the team doctor Daniel Rodriguez.Iainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05925655687706367025[email protected]2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-734422637803061139.post-17273582452909676112016-04-09T08:00:00.000-04:002016-04-09T08:00:09.150-04:00Cheating and Corruption in Football - Part 4 of 5: Luis Suarez Lends a Hand<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k_IkLDWoEF0/VwhAWaGaO6I/AAAAAAAAH5U/ELHFyhL422I6KAknWEmYNauLp9zR4UvDQ/s1600/_73600749_suarez.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k_IkLDWoEF0/VwhAWaGaO6I/AAAAAAAAH5U/ELHFyhL422I6KAknWEmYNauLp9zR4UvDQ/s640/_73600749_suarez.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Leading the line for Barcelona as part of the lethal MSN attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Neymar, Luis Suarez has kept his nose clean as of late, and many are forgetting the colour run of misdemeanours he wracked up for both club and country over a torrid four year span.<br /><a name='more'></a><br />But there are some who will never forgive some of the things the Uruguayan international got up to between, and including, the last two World Cups.<br /><br />Before he racially abused Manchester United's Patrice Evra and bit not one but three different players, Suarez became a villain across large swathes of Africa when his cynical handball knocked Ghana out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.<br /><br /><br />After helping Uruguay through the first round group stage, Suarez scored both goals in a 2-1 round of 16 victory against South Korea with his second goal being particularly memorable. Giggsy Keeps it In the Family</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ioap7Ss-XAk/VseRR9ihWHI/AAAAAAAAHns/F6hul4ruVeM/s1600/Ryan_Giggs_2894785b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ioap7Ss-XAk/VseRR9ihWHI/AAAAAAAAHns/F6hul4ruVeM/s640/Ryan_Giggs_2894785b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs did everything possible to keep the story of his extramarital affair out of the papers a few years back for good reason: he was shagging his brother's wife.<br /><br />It wasn't just a one time filthy fumble after a drunken Giggs Family dinner either. The former Welsh international had been slipping it between the goalposts of his brother Rhodri's wife for eight long years before the story got out.<br /><br />With United fans currently calling for manager Louis van Gaal's head, some are suggesting Giggs should take the job. It's not as if Giggs doesn't have experience in taking another man's role and picking up his sloppy seconds afterall.<br /><br /><h3>2.) John Terry Takes One From the Team</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IN3z9DdUSWc/VsePjQ56yBI/AAAAAAAAHnc/mP4Ar51dDo0/s1600/john-terry-crying2_782147c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IN3z9DdUSWc/VsePjQ56yBI/AAAAAAAAHnc/mP4Ar51dDo0/s640/john-terry-crying2_782147c.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />Chelsea's Captain, Leader, and Legend John Terry proved himself to be less than an ideal teammate in 2010 when it was revealed that he had engaged in a few rounds of hide the sausage roll with teammate Wayne Bridge's soon to be ex-wife Vanessa Perroncel. Terry would lose his England captaincy over the sordid affair.<br /><br />There were, naturally, a lot of jokes made about the affair, my favourite of which being, "What do Wayne Bridge's ex-missus and the 2008 Champions League final goalpost have in common? They’ve both been banged by John Terry."<br /><br /><h3>3.) Ashley Cole Get's Around</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bgAXByJDKLE/VseP42R4j4I/AAAAAAAAHng/tr8aF1o3x-M/s1600/england-footballer-ashley-cole-pictured-with-cheryl-cole-during-their-marriage-632995839.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bgAXByJDKLE/VseP42R4j4I/AAAAAAAAHng/tr8aF1o3x-M/s640/england-footballer-ashley-cole-pictured-with-cheryl-cole-during-their-marriage-632995839.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />When Ashley Cole married Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Tweedy in the summer of 2006 it seemed like the latest perfect match between football and the world of pop. But despite being wed to the lovely Cheryl, Cole tore through women quicker than he used to get down the left side for Chelsea and England. After a string of affairs his marriage fell apart in less than four years.<br /><br />Perhaps he would have been happier with a Spice Girl? On second thought that Sporty Spice looks like she'd chop a guy's balls off if they tried something like this while in a relationship with her.<br /><br /><h3>4.) Kolo Toure the Car Salesman</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E-mUeOOEoaU/VsePJOs7JFI/AAAAAAAAHnY/7_5a2z9CLZ0/s1600/sYQXmFr.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="612" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E-mUeOOEoaU/VsePJOs7JFI/AAAAAAAAHnY/7_5a2z9CLZ0/s640/sYQXmFr.png" width="640" /></a></div><br />Former Manchester City defender Kolo Toure cheated on his wife with a young model in 2012 while claiming to the unsuspecting bit on the side that he was a car salesman from Ghana.<br /><br />The Ivory Coast international would sneak into her council flat wearing a pulled down ball cap, so he wasn't recognized, and explained the gifts he was showering her with by claiming record sales.<br /><br />I've heard of guys pretending to be footballers to land women, but footballers pretending to be car salesmen? Whatever works I suppose.<br /><br /><h3>5.) Ronaldo Gets More Than He Bargained For</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hFtrzPL-MBg/VseRZVbhIXI/AAAAAAAAHnw/RZzjIKI-Kz4/s1600/Ronaldo-fat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="468" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hFtrzPL-MBg/VseRZVbhIXI/AAAAAAAAHnw/RZzjIKI-Kz4/s640/Ronaldo-fat.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />One of our loyal readers, Jason Bramble, makes a point each Monday of diligently going through our weekly Football Babes feature and helpfully pointing out when any of them appear to be packing something other than an extra tube of mascara in their pants.<br /><br />Well, the Brazilian Ronaldo, aka "Fat Ronaldo", could have used Mr. Bramble's services in 2008 when he picked up three prostitutes in his homeland for a bit of slap and tickle, who unexpectedly turned out to be transvestites.<br /><br />Police were called to his hotel room after he realized the girls all had twigs and berries, flipped out and then refused to pay them £15,000 in 'hush' money. Ronaldo later claimed that he wasn't in the right frame of mind when he picked up the three ladies of the night, while they countered that he knew all along that they were transvestites and also that he hoovered up a few lines of Colombian bam-bam with them for good measure.Iainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05925655687706367025[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-734422637803061139.post-87225029598718567082016-02-17T08:00:00.000-05:002016-02-23T19:16:41.593-05:00Football's Biggest Ever Scandals (Part 5 of 5): Bad Santa - The Unbelievable Story of Chuck Blazer<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CwXzyf2anJQ/VsPmHBVjquI/AAAAAAAAHmU/qou0HegpUSs/s1600/chuck-blazer-052715-ftr-gettyjpg_1xbi6ntzbcf841atxzcskj61hu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CwXzyf2anJQ/VsPmHBVjquI/AAAAAAAAHmU/qou0HegpUSs/s640/chuck-blazer-052715-ftr-gettyjpg_1xbi6ntzbcf841atxzcskj61hu.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />Income tax evasion, racketeering, money laundering, and wire fraud. In fact, he only became interested in the sport when he started coaching his son in 1976, and even then it was only the administrative side of the game and it's untapped potential in North America that excited him.<br /><br />The ambitious Blazer rapidly advanced through the ranks of the then poorly run regionalized U.S. Soccer associations before he landed a prime position in 1984 with the USSF (United States Soccer Federation) as the Executive Vice President of International Competition.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nqg1e2uV2uc/VsPmX0NT_CI/AAAAAAAAHmY/YfYlMLwTUNU/s1600/01_NF31FBI_1153443k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nqg1e2uV2uc/VsPmX0NT_CI/AAAAAAAAHmY/YfYlMLwTUNU/s640/01_NF31FBI_1153443k.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />Overseeing a national side that had only played two matches in the preceding two years, Blazer quickly got to work arranging a staggering 19 matches for the U.S. during his first two years in the role.<br /><br />At the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Blazer made the acquaintance of a football administrator from the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago named Jack Warner, and their unlikely friendship would turn football in the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) region on it's head.<br /><br />CONCACAF's power base had always traditionally lay in Mexico and Central America, simply because the nation's there were the only ones in the region that really cared about football and put any significant resources into it.<br /><br />With FIFA's edict of every member country, regardless of size, having an equal vote in the world governing body's matters, like World Cup hosting rights and presidential elections, Warner and Blazer saw the potential in getting all of the island nations and their precious votes on their side.<br /><br />After a brief time away from the game following the 1986 World Cup, thanks to ruffling too many feathers at the USSF and allegations of financial impropriety surrounding the American Soccer League he was running, Blazer visited Warner in Trinidad in 1989 before their crunch qualifier with the U.S. for a spot at the following year's World Cup in Italy.<br /><br />On a momentous night for America's national side, Paul Caligiuri's "shot heard round the world" secured a 1-0 victory for the U.S. and a ticket to World Cup for the first time in forty years for the U.S.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qkMUcKlpl9M/VsPmo4iIRZI/AAAAAAAAHmc/BH1aGkvacP8/s1600/19891119-gift.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="506" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qkMUcKlpl9M/VsPmo4iIRZI/AAAAAAAAHmc/BH1aGkvacP8/s640/19891119-gift.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />In the stands that night, Blazer secured a victory of his own as he convinced Warner to stand for CONCACAF president and assured him that besides assisting with gathering the Caribbean votes, he would get the U.S. on side.<br /><br />Campaigning on the promise to raise funds for the forgotten nations of the region, Warner won the presidency at a canter and rewarded his friend Blazer by appointing him first as his General Secretary, and then crucially handing him a seat on FIFA's Executive Committee.<br /><br />The Executive Committee is made up of FIFA's movers and shakers who decide on who can bid on tournaments such as the World Cup and work on the lucrative marketing and television deals connected to these competitions.<br /><br />Asserting himself as FIFA's dynamic deal maker, Blazer wined and dined sheikhs, politicians, celebrities, and business heavyweights around the world. The outgoing 450 pound giant with a scruffy white Santa Claus beard had a knack for getting deals brokered, one way or another.<br /><br />While making FIFA and his own region a lot of money, Blazer did rather well for himself through alleged kickbacks and bribes.<br /><br />On top of his international wheeling and dealing he had an agreement with CONCACAF that paid him 10% off of every dollar that went into the federation.<br /><br />So, essentially, anyone whoever attended a CONCACAF Champions League or Gold Cup match helped pad Blazer's bank account. This was in addition to the reported $15 million in commissions he pocketed on the federation's corporate partnership deals.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S9mEE8hOBXg/VsPn4uhakuI/AAAAAAAAHms/jkoHA8wJUyo/s1600/blazer2_3329475b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S9mEE8hOBXg/VsPn4uhakuI/AAAAAAAAHms/jkoHA8wJUyo/s640/blazer2_3329475b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />The man who started out as an unemployed soccer dad, came to live in an $18,000-a-month Trump Tower apartment, with a prime view of New York's Central Park, with a $6,000-a-month adjoining apartment for his cats.<br /><br />Besides his luxury apartment in Manhattan, Blazer also owned property in Miami Beach and the Bahamas. To top it off, he also racked up an estimated $29 million on CONCACAF's credit card.<br /><br />Perhaps struggling with how to adequately explain his income, or just because of pure greed, Blazer failed to pay income tax for over a decade.<br /><br />This, and the fallout over the 2018/2022 World Cup bidding fiasco, brought him to the attention of the IRS and the FBI.<br /><div><br /></div><div>Prior to the 2012 Olympic Games, Federal Agents caught up to Blazer and his choice was simple: wear a wire and rat out FIFA's corrupt inner circle or go to prison for a very long time.<br /><br />Blazer chose the former option and with his help as an informant on May 27, 2015, several FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich on wide ranging corruption charges.<br /><br />Reportedly though, there is more to come in a scandal that has done so much to shake the public's faith in a game that so many of us love.<br /><br />___________________________________<br /><b>Football's Biggest Ever Scandals:</b><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-1.html">(Part 1 of 5): Manchester City's Under the Table Payments</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-2.html">(Part 2 of 5): Totonero 1980</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-3.html">(Part 3 of 5): Maradona Gets Kicked Out of USA '94</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-4.html">(Part 4 of 5): Olympique de Marseille's Epic Run of Corruption and Lies</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-5.html">(Part 5 of 5): Bad Santa - The Unbelievable Story of Chuck Blazer</a><br /><br /></div>Iainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05925655687706367025[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-734422637803061139.post-87044129443247676572016-02-16T08:00:00.000-05:002016-02-23T19:17:01.189-05:00Football's Biggest Ever Scandals (Part 4 of 5): Olympique de Marseille's Epic Run of Corruption and Lies<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YuVjTs8G4Ok/VsH-Wq-MT1I/AAAAAAAAHl4/X9CkEr1Mz2M/s1600/OM_C1_1993.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="362" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YuVjTs8G4Ok/VsH-Wq-MT1I/AAAAAAAAHl4/X9CkEr1Mz2M/s640/OM_C1_1993.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br />With a star studded side containing players such as Didier Deschamps, Alen Bokšić, Rudi Völler, Abedi Pelé, Basil Boli, Marcel Desailly and Fabien Barthez the Olympique de Marseille side of the early 1990's should have been set up for success, but their colourful owner Bernard Tapie wasn't in the habit of taking chances.<br /><br />For five straight season between 1988-1989 and 1992-1993, Marseille owned the French league title. But besides hoovering up some of the most talented players from across Europe and beyond, Tapie was also regularly buying off opponents to ensure his side's success.<br /><br />Despite rumours of his impropriety swirling around the French domestic game, and an increasing number of strange looking results, the footballing authorities refused to pursue the matter and Tapie's scandalous subterfuge continued on unimpeded.<br /><br />Besides the club's dominance in France, the prize Tapie really had his eyes on was the European Cup and although it's never been proven, there are allegations that Marseille's corruption didn't stop at their own borders.<br /><br />In 1991 the club made it through to the final of Europe's premier cup competition, but were undone on penalty kicks by a brilliant Red Star Belgrade side.<br /><br />Undaunted, Tapie added to what was already a glittering squad and in 1993 they returned to the final where they would meet up against the dominant team of the era, Fabio Capello's AC Milan.<br /><br />Before the final, Marseille defeated Valenciennes to wrap up the French title in a match that would later have dire consequences for the club. They were well rested as they took on Italy's finest and although they were the underdogs, they were quietly confident of victory.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zj1CgTsE804/VsH-f8qy7-I/AAAAAAAAHl8/-IMfrW8OeAQ/s1600/2110458411_small_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="486" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zj1CgTsE804/VsH-f8qy7-I/AAAAAAAAHl8/-IMfrW8OeAQ/s640/2110458411_small_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br /><br />Milan, with Marco van Basten and Paolo Maldini among their ranks, started well and had great chances to score through Van Basten and Daniele Massaro. Eventually though, they were undone by a 43rd minute header by Ivorian-born French international Basil Boli. Despite a few threatening attacks in the second half, Milan were unable to find an equalizer and fell 1-0.<br /><br />In becoming the first French side to capture the European Cup, it should have been a glorious time in Marseille's history. But Tapie's house of cards was about to come tumbling down.<br /><br />Prior to the aforementioned match with Valenciennes, several of their players alerted their manager Boro Primorac that they had been offered money to take it easy on the soon to be crowned league champions.<br /><br />Primorac notified the French authorities, and finally after years of turning a blind eye to Tapie's machinations they fully investigated the matter and found the club guilty of wide reaching corruption.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zHA2DsE8tPg/VsH-rogMniI/AAAAAAAAHmA/9LSHXGF0meU/s1600/Bernard-Tapie-conseille-a-Nicolas-Sarkozy-de-ne-pas-revenir-en-politique.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zHA2DsE8tPg/VsH-rogMniI/AAAAAAAAHmA/9LSHXGF0meU/s640/Bernard-Tapie-conseille-a-Nicolas-Sarkozy-de-ne-pas-revenir-en-politique.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br /><br />The club were subsequently banned from European competition for the following season, stripped of their 1992/1993 French League title and relegated to the second division.<br /><br />They did however get to keep the European Cup, despite allegations of bribery in a few of their Champions League matches leading up to the final. In particular, their 1-0 over Brugge came under investigation for potential match fixing and the 6-0 drubbing of CSKA has also come under suspicion.<br /><br />No evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Marseille that year has ever been proven though and their name remains on the list of European Cup/UEFA Champions League winners.<br /><br />Tapie, for his role in the scandal, was removed as president of Olympique Marseille and would later be sentenced to two years in jail.<br /><br />___________________________________<br /><b>Football's Biggest Ever Scandals:</b><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-1.html">(Part 1 of 5): Manchester City's Under the Table Payments</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-2.html">(Part 2 of 5): Totonero 1980</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-3.html">(Part 3 of 5): Maradona Gets Kicked Out of USA '94</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-4.html">(Part 4 of 5): Olympique de Marseille's Epic Run of Corruption and Lies</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-5.html">(Part 5 of 5): Bad Santa - The Unbelievable Story of Chuck Blazer</a><br /><div><br /></div>Iainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05925655687706367025[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-734422637803061139.post-50035095320006142702016-02-15T08:00:00.000-05:002016-02-23T19:17:53.128-05:00Football's Biggest Ever Scandals (Part 3 of 5): Maradona Gets Kicked Out of USA '94<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ux_opDn6IVw/VsEtX88JClI/AAAAAAAAHlY/X0QLCFDuOnQ/s1600/Maradona-pt-ziar-cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="366" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ux_opDn6IVw/VsEtX88JClI/AAAAAAAAHlY/X0QLCFDuOnQ/s640/Maradona-pt-ziar-cover.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>The World Cup, as the legend goes, has only been won single handedly twice: By Garrincha for Brazil in 1962 and by Diego Maradona in 1986 for Argentina.<br /><div><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a></div><div><br />That humid summer in Mexico, the man who many consider to be one of the finest players ever, led Argentina to victory with five goals and out of this world performances which left opposition defenders trailing in his wake.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>Among his memorable feats, in what was arguably the last truly great World Cup, was that he scored a famous individual goal against England in the Quarterfinals, put away one nearly as good in the Semi Final against Belgium and despite heavy man marking by West Germany in the Final, he provided the assist for&nbsp;Jorge Burruchaga's tournament winning goal.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aeQoAZpg6aU/VsEuplSqCiI/AAAAAAAAHlk/HFZAWacgVM4/s1600/maradona_1986_2972173b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aeQoAZpg6aU/VsEuplSqCiI/AAAAAAAAHlk/HFZAWacgVM4/s640/maradona_1986_2972173b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>He also found time to show his darker, or perhaps mischievous, side when he famously punched in the "Hand of God" goal against England.</div><div><br /></div><div>Sandwiched either side of that wonderful tournament for the Argentine icon, was the 1982 World Cup which was best remembered by a consistently fouled Maradona losing his temper and being sent off in disgrace against Brazil, and the 1990 World Cup in Italy where a half fit Maradona somehow helped a poor side to the final where they would narrowly lose to West Germany.</div><div><br /></div><div>The 1994 World Cup in the United States was seen as El Pibe de Oro's ("The Golden Boy") last chance to shine on the world stage.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>The years leading up to the finals in America had not been good one's for Maradona though. Perugia, Bologna, Napoli, Avellino, Taranto and Palermo were given five point penalties for their part in the scandal.<br /><br />Rossi, who was handed a three-year ban for his role in Totonero, later had his suspension cut short by 12 months so he could join up with Italy at the 1982 World Cup and the rest, as they say, is history.<br /><br />___________________________________<br /><b>Football's Biggest Ever Scandals:</b><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-1.html">(Part 1 of 5): Manchester City's Under the Table Payments</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-2.html">(Part 2 of 5): Totonero 1980</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-3.html">(Part 3 of 5): Maradona Gets Kicked Out of USA '94</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-4.html">(Part 4 of 5): Olympique de Marseille's Epic Run of Corruption and Lies</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-5.html">(Part 5 of 5): Bad Santa - The Unbelievable Story of Chuck Blazer</a><br /><div><br /></div>Iainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05925655687706367025[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-734422637803061139.post-10550733782234568142016-02-12T08:00:00.000-05:002016-02-23T19:18:35.226-05:00Football's Biggest Ever Scandals (Part 1 of 5): Manchester City's Under the Table Payments<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0ajzDR5fLSo/Vrympf0_qYI/AAAAAAAAHjk/4nmoFxH5UlE/s1600/1904%2Bsquad.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="462" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0ajzDR5fLSo/Vrympf0_qYI/AAAAAAAAHjk/4nmoFxH5UlE/s640/1904%2Bsquad.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Thankfully for those of us who enjoy a good old bit of integrity in football, there hasn't been a major match fixing or drug scandal for a few years.<br /><br />But if football history has taught us anything, there's usually some sort of shady business bubbling under the surface, ready to erupt when we least expect it.<br /><br />This series recounts some of the biggest scandals in the history of football.<br /><br /><h3>Manchester City's Loss is Manchester United's Gain</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hh4j2o01u6E/Vrym3V2W_KI/AAAAAAAAHjo/tB5KY3un_bc/s1600/C_71_article_1460962_image_list_image_list_item_0_image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hh4j2o01u6E/Vrym3V2W_KI/AAAAAAAAHjo/tB5KY3un_bc/s640/C_71_article_1460962_image_list_image_list_item_0_image.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />In the first decade of the 20th Century, Manchester City were one of the best sides in England. Winning the FA Cup in 1904 and twice coming close to winning the league. After narrowly losing out to Newcastle United in the title race in 1904-1905 following a season ending loss to Aston Villa, the Birmingham club's captain Alec Leake accused City's Welsh star Billy Meredith of offering him&nbsp;£10 to throw the game. Meredith was found guilty of this impropriety by the Football Association and as a result was fined and suspended from playing football for a year.<br /><br />City, for their part, did not offer Meredith any support during his suspension and the enraged winger responded by lifting the lid on the club's own misdeeds.<br /><br />An FA investigation was immediately opened after he went public with the following statement:<br /><br />"What was the secret of the success of the Manchester City team? In my opinion, the fact that the club put aside the rule that no player should receive more than four pounds a week ... The team delivered the goods, the club paid for the goods delivered and both sides were satisfied."<br /><br />In an era of strict maximum wages, City were found guilty of making illegal under the table payments to players and as a result their entire squad were barred from playing for the club again.<br /><br />At an auction to distribute the players, four of City's finest including Meredith and Sandy Turnbull ended up at Manchester United. In one of football's enduring legends it's been said that United boss Ernest Mangnall had somehow rigged the auction in his side's favour.<br /><br />United were to immediately benefit at City's expense as they won their first League Championship in 1907-1908, which they followed up with their first FA Cup in 1909 at the Crystal Palace. The lone goal in that final against Bristol City was fired in by former City forward Turnbull and the man of the match was, naturally, Billy Meredith.<br /><br />Meredith would go on to make over 300 appearances for United, helping the club to another league title in 1910-1911 and in the process become their first true superstar. Thanks to the illegal payments scandal, and it's aftermath, the rivalry between Manchester's two clubs was firmly established.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UVG1TyhebFI/VrynD55aqiI/AAAAAAAAHjs/2Uszc91olfs/s1600/1909-cf-3-possible-cover-pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UVG1TyhebFI/VrynD55aqiI/AAAAAAAAHjs/2Uszc91olfs/s640/1909-cf-3-possible-cover-pic.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br /><br />___________________________________<br /><b>Football's Biggest Ever Scandals:</b><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-1.html">(Part 1 of 5): Manchester City's Under the Table Payments</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-2.html">(Part 2 of 5): Totonero 1980</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-3.html">(Part 3 of 5): Maradona Gets Kicked Out of USA '94</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-4.html">(Part 4 of 5): Olympique de Marseille's Epic Run of Corruption and Lies</a><br /><a href="http://www.footyfair.com/2016/02/footballs-biggest-ever-scandals-part-5.html">(Part 5 of 5): Bad Santa - The Unbelievable Story of Chuck Blazer</a><br /><div><br /></div>Iainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05925655687706367025[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-734422637803061139.post-2865049231016296422014-12-26T12:00:00.000-05:002014-12-26T12:00:02.031-05:00Alexandr Kokorin Balls Deep in Strippers<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KcCD_nNfGF0/VJg96ou1jAI/AAAAAAAAKkw/50B_46Y1RnE/s1600/kokorin7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KcCD_nNfGF0/VJg96ou1jAI/AAAAAAAAKkw/50B_46Y1RnE/s1600/kokorin7.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div><br />Alexandr Kokorin, the 23 year old Russian forward from Dynamo Moscow and Russian international has been caught in one of Russia biggest footballing scandals. No it doesn’t involve match fixing or drugs, instead it involves strippers.<br /><a name='more'></a><br />The Russian player saw this week private pictures of him with strippers during what appears to be an orgy leaked on the internet. I guess he didn’t realize that when you party hard you should leave all mobile devices at home. <br /><br />To add fuel to the fire on the same day the pictures of him with strippers leaked on the internet he had posted a romantic picture of him with his girlfriend, as they returned from Dubai where they enjoyed a mini vacation. It looks like he went double dipping and enjoyed the vacation a bit more than his girlfriend.<br /><br />As the pictures of his stripper orgy make the rounds it will be interesting to see what the response from his girlfriend will be, perhaps a nice luxurious gift will be enough to show her that he made a mistake in what could only be a short lapse of good judgment on his part. Maybe, it is not what it looks to be, but we all know that it is always what it looks to be, and in this case the pictures tell no lies.<br /><div><br /></div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bK2GKhWVzyo/VJg9rqFK6yI/AAAAAAAAKkg/obCf6_b-Xx4/s1600/kokorin1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bK2GKhWVzyo/VJg9rqFK6yI/AAAAAAAAKkg/obCf6_b-Xx4/s1600/kokorin1.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kokorin and Girlfriend</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UwVdE7vKdHI/VJg9ruWc1yI/AAAAAAAAKkc/BgThWuOfwlM/s1600/kokorin2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UwVdE7vKdHI/VJg9ruWc1yI/AAAAAAAAKkc/BgThWuOfwlM/s1600/kokorin2.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kokorin and stripper</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lEqQ0pUeG0A/VJg9ruIHy5I/AAAAAAAAKkY/QMK9cU7SyUI/s1600/kokorin3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lEqQ0pUeG0A/VJg9ruIHy5I/AAAAAAAAKkY/QMK9cU7SyUI/s1600/kokorin3.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kokorin with two strippers</td></tr></tbody></table><div><br /></div>Unknown[email protected]0
