To celebrate "Back to the Future" day, we decided to give you some of the most interesting facts about football during the 1985-86 season, the same year (1985) the first installment of the classic film was released and was set in.

A Soviet Ballon d'Or

The most coveted individual prize in world football the Ballon d'Or was won by Dynamo Kiev and Soviet Union international Igor Belanov who claimed the prize ahead of England international Gary Lineker.




Liverpool's 16th

1986 marked the year Liverpool FC had won their 16th English titles, their third last before the current 25 year spell without one.




The Birth of a Legend

On February 5, 1985 Portuguese star football Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Madeira.




A New Champion in France

The 1985-86 season in France's top tier Ligue 1 marked the first ever domestic championship for Paris Saint-Germain in a league that was mostly dominated by Saint-Étienne, Marseille, Nantes and AS Monaco in previous years.




First Time FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

The qualifications for the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico concluded in 1985 with 3 first time participants booking their place in the following summer's tournament. Iraq qualified for the first time through the Asian zone. Denmark won their group ahead of the Soviets and Republic of Ireland to book their first appearance at the tournament. And from the CONCACAF region it was FootyFair's home nation Canada that managed to book their Mexican flight ahead of Honduras and Costa Rica.
