Kon's 2015-16 EPL Predictions

With the Premier League kick-off fast approaching, we here at FootyFair would like to pretend for a moment that we can predict the future and see if we can pinpoint the outcomes of a few scenarios for the upcoming season in the EPL. So here we go...first off are Kon's predictions for coming year.

Most surprising club - Newcastle United

Perhaps the pre-season didn't show much in terms of progress from the miserable campaign of 2014-15, but The Magpies have a lot of potential to turn some heads this year. With new bench-boss Steve McClaren and signings such as Serbian youngster Aleksandar Mitrović and Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum Toon Army may have something to celebrate in the upcoming season if the new manager can get the best out of guys like Rémy Cabella and Siem de Jong which had been sub-par (or in de Jong's case injury riddled) so far since their switch to the North East one year ago. If McClaren can bring out the full potential out of this skillful (on paper) squad, it wouldn't surprise me to see Newcastle push for a Europa League spot.

Most disappointing club - Southampton

To be honest, I didn't have much faith in Southampton last year and boy did they prove me wrong. Nonetheless, I will take a stab at this side again as I really believe they are due to disappoint. For the record, I have absolutely nothing against the Saints and have been actually quite impressed with the club in the last couple of years. But, with the off-season sales of Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin (and despite their signings to date) Southampton is likely to drop away from the Europa League spots and should finish somewhere around the 9th to 12th spot, which at this point would be looked at as disappointing.

Best new signing - Petr Cech

Last season The Gunners conceded the 3rd least goals in the league and consequently finished third in the league standings. The signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech may very well put Arsenal over the hump and we may just see them fighting for the title late into the season.

Worst new signing - Claudio Ranieri

OK, so it is a manager, nonetheless, I hate the fact that Leicester fell for Renieri's name in the world of football, because to be honest I don't think he's had what it takes to be a good manager on any level of the game for the last decade or so. Even with big money clubs the Italian hasn't been able to achieve much success since his days in charge of Valencia in the mid 2000's. With Ranieri at the helm I predict Leicester City to struggle through the season and fight to stay up.

First manager to get sacked - Dick Advocaat

It's already a surprise that Advocaat stayed on as manager with the Black Cats and despite the various signings, I don't see Sunderland making huge progress to start the year. The addition of Jeremain Lens and four other players may seem like a big deal, but with a total of £17 million spent between the five new signings I don't believe it will be enough to find the right answers for Sunderland's struggles. If the season doesn't get off to the start Sunderland's ownership is hoping for, expect Dick to be the first EPL manager out the door this season.

Three club to get relegated - Aston Villa, Bournemouth & Sunderland

Sure, it's a risky move to predict two newly promoted clubs to stay up in their first year, but perhaps I see Villa's and Sunderland's future being worst than that of Norwich and Watford. Considering the money they got for Christian Benteke I don't believe the Villains have used it well in their own signings and their pockets are now near empty. Sunderland also struggled last year and honestly, I don't believe their summer signings are the answer to their problems. Last but not least, as much as it pains me to say (because I'd love to see Bournemouth stick around for a while) I don't believe they have quite what it takes in the always difficult first year after being promoted to the top tier of English football.

Top scorer - Harry Kane

If for nothing but simply being one year older and wiser, this season is Kane's for the taking. Now that he's got the full backing of his manager and team, Harry can become the league's top scorer not just this season, but for some to come. Also, with the defensive additions to the squad and the back-line not being in the forefront of the team, Tottenham may be able to play an even more attacking style of play which in turn could put the ball at Kane's feet on more occasions.

EPL Champions - Chelsea

As much as I love to see a bit of a change in guard at the top of the table from year to year, I can't see anyone but Arsenal really pushing Mourinho's squad into the corner this year. But, with the addition of Colombian striker Radamel Falcao and the ever improving Belgian wonder Eden Hazard, this year's Chelsea's squad may even prove better than that of last season.

  1. As a Newcastle supporter I'm not surprised by your bias. Carver's comments about Villa are what reignited the banter last year. I can see why you wouldn't rate the players Villa has brought in. We'll see how the wholesale changes work out. I suspect they'll do better than Newcastle in any event. ;)
    Best of Luck!

  2. After watching Villa's Preseason so far, I have seen that:
    Veretout is better than cleverley
    Gueye is better than Delph
Amavi is better than any left back at club
    Ayew is better than weimann
Gestede is better (in the air) than benteke
    Richards is better than vlaar

    Things are looking up!
