The Mother of All Bandwagon Jumpers – Rihanna

A little while ago I wrote about the "Do's and Don'ts" of bandwagon jumping during the World Cup. (read it here). And while I'm not sure how many celebrities actually ended up reading that particular piece, I do know of one that most certainly did not.

I’m sure by now everyone has seen singer Rihanna celebrate Germany’s World Cup Final victory as if she was born and bred in the European country. Although there’s absolutely nothing wrong with supporting a country other than your own in international competitions, there’s something mighty upsetting about people (and especially celebrities) who change teams more often than they do socks.

Earlier in the competition Rihanna was all about Brazil. Dressing in Brazil gear, waving the green, yellow and blue flag and posing for all kinds of photos in the host nation’s colors.

Then, after Brazil’s win over Colombia, she tweeted “This is bittersweet!!!! I shed a tear for you Rodriguez!!! :’(“. Clearly showing that yes, she does support Brazil, but also has a soft spot for Colombian star-player James Rodriguez, or perhaps she even supports both countries.

And then came the Brazilian nightmare in a form of a 7-1 loss to the Germans. I’m not sure about you, but if there was ever a team that handed my favorite club or country a pounding like the Germans handed to Brazil, I would spend the rest of my days cursing the squad that did that. Not Rihanna though, oh no. The world-famous singer has managed to create her own ultimate version of “turn the other cheek”, as she was seen celebrating harder than the Germans themselves when they defeated Argentina in the finals. She even managed to grab someone’s German jersey and wave it in the air.

It’s important to note that while she celebrated Germany’s goal like a lunatic, flashing her bra to the entire stadium, Rihanna wore a generic shirt, not branded with either of the finalist’s colors (not to mention the fact that she also had the Brazilian flag on her neck for whatever reason). This makes me believe that it wouldn't matter whether it was Germany or Argentina who had won that match, she would be in either one of the dressing rooms celebrating with the players.

Rihanna is a special kind of bandwagon jumper. It seems that she will cheer for anyone as long as she can have a twitter snap with the winning team.
